As an Educator
- He was like a “Johnny Appleseed” spawning great physicians and great teachers of medicine who themselves established departments throughout the country
- In 1892, he completed writing the 1,119 page “Principles and Practice of Medicine” which quickly became the standard textbook of medicine throughout much of the world. Its readership was so widespread that it was later translated into French, Russian and even Chinese. For the first 15 years the textbook was single authored which essentially meant that Osler “knew all of medicine”. It was later co-authored and even continued to be published for many years after his death, so that Osler’s “Principles and Practice of Medicine” had a lifespan of almost 50 years.
- He authored close to 1200 papers, manuscripts, speeches, books, articles and published lectures, on a wide variety of topics including humanism, ethics, and the “Way of Life”
